All kids look forward to summer vacation; to lazy days spent
pool side, sleeping in until they wake, to days spent barefoot slurping down
popsicles on the front porch and chasing down lightning bugs in the dark. But
for my kids, one of their most anticipated parts of summer is creating their
bucket list!
This summer bucket list is perfect for parents with kids of all ages, is time and budget conscience, with most destinations less than 2 hours away from the Chillicothe area, and most of the activities listed are fairly inexpensive to do with a family.
So let's dive in!

2. Take a trip to the Capitol in Jefferson City.
Remember the first time you saw the capitol? Didn’t it seem exciting walking into that huge building and seeing the places where Missouri laws were made? There’s a ton of educational, yet entertaining things to do in and around the Capitol building including the Missouri State Museum, Jefferson Landing, and the Governor’s Mansion. Jefferson City also has some beautiful riverside parks for picnics and playing.
5. Who can forget the tale of that ornery Tom Sawyer tricking Ben into white-washing the fence? The Mark Twain Cave is a great place to visit on a hot summer day. Cool and inviting, with fun tales of Tom Sawyer’s adventures. Hannibal offers many picnic spots overlooking the river and has a neat little ice cream parlor downtown.

Lexington is a small town with a big history. Just over
an hour drive will take you to this quaint town still bearing evidence of the
civil war. Kids will be fascinated to find cannonballs lodged in the front
of the courthouse and the evidence of 150 year old bullet and cannon fire which
can be seen inside the historical Anderson House. If your kids are older, they might find the
fact that the Oliver Anderson House is reported as one of the most haunted
places in Missouri. An interesting twist to the trip!
